KUALA BESUT, July 23 – Wanita Umno is confident that the women voters in Kuala Besut will vote for Barisan Nasional (BN) in tomorrow’s by-election as they believe that only BN can ensure continued development in the area and the people’s improved standard of living.
Its chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said the movement’s confidence in this was based on the indication of support from the women voters during its non-stop campaigning throughout Kuala Besut.
“The women voters’ acceptance of the BN candidate is at a good level, as a result of our house-to-house campaigning.
“We explained why they should choose BN so that they realise the importance of maintaining national stability and for systematic transformation at the same time.
“The women of Kuala Besut are happy with the various development programmes planned for the area like the river embankment project which will benefit the people,” she told reporters after a get-together with the media, here, last night.
Meanwhile, she said the Wanita Umno by-election machinery had grown to 1,500 volunteers in strength now from 600 at the initial stage of campaigning to assist BN.
“Women form 49.9 per cent of the voters here. That is why we have doubled our by-election machinery’s strength for the campaign here,” she added.
The Kuala Besut state seat by-election will see a straight fight between BN candidate Tengku Zaihan Che Ku Abd Rahman, 37, an engineer, and businessman Endot@Azlan Yusof, 48, from PAS.
The constituency has 17,683 voters. The seat fell vacant following the death of its incumbent assemblyman Dr A. Rahman Mokhtar on June 26 from lung cancer.
