JOHANNESBURG, July 25- Internet usage has grown significantly in South Africa with 14 million users this year, Xinhua news agency reported citing a survey result.
“The number of people with access to the web is higher than thought,” said the Digital Media and Marketing Association (DMMA) and Echo Consultancy in its latest report.
Internet users in the country were approximately 6.8 million in 2010 and 8.5 million in 2011 and rose by 2 million in the past year, said the report.
About 39 percent of users were adults with the rest teenagers.
South Africa is the largest economy in the continent and has a population of more than 52 million.
The report said rising internet use would promote social and economic development, such as in making cash payments and providing information on health, weather and jobs.
The World Bank said every 10 percent increase in mobile penetration would likely mean a corresponding 0.8 percent rise in the country’s gross domestic production.
