PETALING JAYA, JULY 29- DAP’s Klang MP Charles Santiago today called for a thorough and transparent investigation on R Sri Sanjeevan’s shooting incident.
In the press statement, Santiago said the mafia-style shooting incident on Saturday highlighted the seriousness of crime and the spiraling state of lawlessness in Malaysia.
He also raised the public’s concern on rising crime and safety of their families.
On Saturday evening, Sanjeevan was shot at a traffic light in his hometown Bahau, Negeri Sembilan by two unknown men, but fortunately he cheated death.
The Klang MP also cited that April this year, Customs Deputy Director General Shaharuddin Ibrahim was gunned down in a similar situation, but was killed on the spot.
Yesterday the Negeri Sembilan state police chief vowed to investigate the shooting incident by forming a task force and work together with Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department to solve the case.
It is highly speculated that Sanjeevan’s shooting is linked to his vocal advocacy against crime.
In the past months, MyWatch led by Sanjeevan had made revelations of politicians interfering with police work and that criminal elements have infiltrated the police force including direct links with underworld figures.
“If Sanjeevan and Shaharuddin can be shot in bright daylight, what else would criminals not dare to do?” questioned Santiago
Santiago also stated that such lawlessness is due to the increasing failure of public institutions to ensure the rule of law and safety of citizens.
He also added that these are glaring symptoms resulting from the unwillingness of the government to reform key institutions like PDRM, MACC, AG Chambers, and judiciary.
“I welcome the IGP’s assurance that a thorough investigation will be conducted on Sanjeevan’s shooting,” he said
However, Santiago stated that the investigation must be done in a transparent manner.
“The IGP must investigate if the shooting is linked to exposing corrupt practice within PDRM and not turn a deaf ear towards these assertions anymore, ” stressed Santiago.
Meanwhile, when FMT contacted MyWatch advisor S Gobi Krishnan, he stated that Sanjeevan is in stable condition.
“Since yesterday night Sanjeevan was experiencing fever, thus the surgery to remove the bullet from his rib cage postponed. Hopefully the surgery can be performed today if his fever subsides,” said Gobi.
Sanjeevan is now warded at Seremban Hospital.
