KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 – Southeast Asia’s fastest growing online shopping mall, Lazada, has officially launched its Marketplace platform across five countries in the region.

The online shopping mall now offers a platform for merchants, both online and offline, to sell their products on any of Lazada’s websites in Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand or the Philippines.

In a statement today, Lazada said it is now operating a multi-category online shopping mall with almost 200,000 products listed.

The Marketplace solution also allows small and medium enterprises, big brands, distributors and retailers to open an online shop without the need for significant upfront capital expenditure, thus lowering their risk.

“We started to develop the Marketplace platform in late 2012 as it fits perfectly with the goal to continuously expand our product offering and service level to customers and partners,” said Lazada’s Chief Executive Officer, Maximilian Bittner.

He also believes the platform has the powerful “side effect” of developing an online eco-system, which will create business opportunities supporting economic growth and job creation in the region.

One of the early adapters to join Lazada’s Marketplace was Pineapple Computers in Malaysia, a well-established electronic retailer.

It also caught the attention of major players such as Philips Electronics, a market leader in several small appliance categories.
