KLANG, Aug 30- Indian textile shop Chennai Silk Palace has come up with a novel way of spreading the Merdeka message – by introducing sarees that incorporate the colours of the ‘Jalur Gemilang’ Malaysian flag.
Chennai Silk Palace Sdn Bhd managing director V. Thanasegaran said on Thursday many shoppers were enthusiastic about purchasing the ‘Merdeka saree’ at the shop in Little India here, a popular hot spot for many residents of the Klang Valley.
“We can see many shoppers also come and buy the Merdeka saree material and stitching clothes according to their convenience.
“We are very proud to introduce this Merdeka saree when the nation celebrates the 56th anniversary of independence,” he told reporters after giving away more than 500 pieces of the Jalur Gemilang to motorists here.
Apart from the Merdeka saree, Thanasegaran said, the shop also sold the 1Malaysia saree, which comes in a batik-like design.
“The 1Malaysia saree, too, has drawn the attention of shoppers. They are unique in concept as they combine the traditional costume and the spirit of patriotism,” he said.
Thanasegaran said the stock of the Merdeka saree was running low due to high demand.
“Some people who did not get the saree are buying the material,” he added.
Earlier, several representatives from Chennai Silk Palace gave out Jalur Gemilang flags to motorists along Jalan Dato Hamzah here.
The annual effort was jointly organised with the Malaysian-Indian Artistes Association.
