SHAH ALAM, Sept 4- Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said that the government cut RON 95 petrol and diesel subsidies by 20 cents each starting today to ensure that the development agenda could be carried on and to ensure the public’s money was spent well.
He said no one wanted the price of RON 95 and diesel to increase to RM2.10 and RM2.00 per liter respectively due to the reduction but it was wise to put the people’s money to better use by building more hospitals, infrastructure and services which were needed.
Although Malaysia is an oil producing country, 90 percent of its output was for domestic use and 10 per cent was exported, he told reporters while attending Bernama Radio24’s 6th Anniversary here Tuesday.
He also said it was not fair to compare Malaysia to other oil producing countries such as Saudi Arabia where the fuel was much cheaper, produced in millions of barrels a day and catered to a smaller population.
