Mogadishu, Nov 12 – At least 100 people are feared dead after a storm hit the coastal areas of Somalia’s northeastern autonomous state of Puntland over the weekend.

Xinhua news agency reports officials in Puntland as saying that the storm, which made landfall on Saturday morning, “wreaked death and destruction across its path along the vast coast.”

“Information collected from coastal areas over the last 48 hours indicates up to 100 persons might have been killed while hundreds remain unaccounted for,” a statement from the local administration said.

The storm effected a vast coastal area of Puntland between Eyl, Beyla, Dangorayo and Hafun Districts in the Garduush area along the eastern coast to Alula District at the tip of the Horn of Africa along the northeastern coast of Puntland.

Authorities have declared disaster emergency and called for international support.

Local authorities said homes, buildings, boats and entire villages have been destroyed with over 100,000 livestock lost.
