Kuala Lumpur,  Nov 15 – A total of 132,801 borrowers of the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN), involving loans of RM2.11 billion, have been blacklisted by the Immigration Department as of last Sept 30.

Deputy Education Minister P. Kamalanathan told the Dewan Rakyat Thursday that a total of 1,329,712 PTPTN borrowers were required to service their loans, totalling RM9.51 billion, as of the same date.

“From the total, 903,920 of the borrowers or 68 per cent have made repayments totalling RM4.82 billion.

“About RM4.69 billion is arrears by 425,792 borrowers who have never made repayments or those who were allowed to pay installments at lower than the actual installment,” he said in response to a question by Khalid Abdul Samad (PAS-Shah Alam).

Khalid wanted to know the amount owed by PTPTN borrowers and the number of those blacklisted.

Kamalanathan said borrowers who failed to make repayments after 16 months of completing their studies would be notified by PTPTN for them to show cause.

To a supplementary question from Datuk Jamaluddin Jarjis (BN-Rompin) on borrowers who had yet to obtain jobs after 16 months of completing their studies, he said they should inform PTPTN.

“For borrowers who cannot afford to make repayments, they can send email to PTPTN to explain their problems and PTPTN is willing to help,” he added.
