Kuala Lumpur, Nov 21 – The government has no plans to implement a time limit on the disposal of vehicles in order to prevent burdening the people, the Dewan Rakyat was told Thursday.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said the proposal by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) was merely one of its findings that vehicles above 12 years old could pose a risk to drivers.

“The government will not burden the people,” he said in response to a supplementary question by Sim Tze Tzin (PKR-Bayan Baru) about the government’s plan on the matter at the Dewan Rakyat.

Last Friday, MIROS director-general Professor Dr. Wong Shaw Voon revealed that vehicles more than 12 years old were not roadworthy as they could have various mechanical defects of which owners were unaware.

Answering a supplementary question by Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (BN-Pengerang) on the government’s plan to reduce taxes on environmentally friendly hybrid or green technology vehicles, Abdul Aziz said there were no such plans.

He said that the collection of road tax revenue formed about 70 percent of the Road Transport Department’s annual revenue.
