Kuala Lumpur, Dec 17 – Umno Youth has urged the government to show the public a detailed study on the hike in highway toll rates and public transportation fare.

Its vice-chief, Khairul Azwan Harun said the study encompassing traffic, future vehicle traffic forecast and concessionaire company profit must be taken into account before an agreement.

“In fact, some highways are no longer alternative routes to consumers and these have caused congestion.

“In other words, pay toll to enter a traffic jam…(In such a scenario) a toll rate hike will risk rousing the ire of road users,” he said when commenting on the issue today.

Last Saturday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar said the time had come to raise the toll rates since the concession agreement stipulated that the rate should be reviewed in 2011.

Meanwhile, in ALOR SETAR, Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang said the government should discuss with the concessionaires towards avoiding toll hikes at several highways which had become major routes.

He said a toll hike would burden consumers as the 13 highways, which were involved in the toll rate review, included some which had become major routes.
