Melaka, Dec 18 – Puteri Umno has suggested three measures which the people, government and public and private companies can adopt in facing the rising cost of living.

Its head, Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, said the first step was for the people to realise the need to exercise thrift, such as by slashing their monthly bills.

“The government and companies must take proactive steps to reduce spending and implement programmes to boost awareness on thrift,” she told Bernama.

Mas Ermieyati said the second measure was for the people, government and private sector to go green, such as by stepping up recycling efforts and encouraging the use of green technology.

She said the use of green technology to save on power and power generation could hopefully lower the cost that had to be paid for power consumption in homes and other premises.

“Tenaga Nasional Berhad could also conduct a study and reduce the tariff for power consumption at night and consider suitable mechanisms as alternatives for current electricity consumption,” she said.

Mas Ermieyati said the third measure was for the government to monitor public-interest monopoly companies to ensure that they did not garner excessive profit at the expense of the people.

She said the government could enforce the ‘anti-trust law’ or ‘competitive law’ such as in the United States to safeguard public interest where monopoly companies were involved.

The government should not implement numerous hikes in prices arbitrarily, the effect of which would pose problems for the people, she added.
