Putrajaya, Dec 23 – Although a minority group in this country, the Indian community is capable of producing many intellectuals and experts in various fields through acquiring higher education and special skills.
MIC president and Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the government had indeed provided various opportunities for the young generation in the Indian community to obtain education and become useful individuals who could contribute immensely to the community and country.
He said as a minority group, the Indian community must give priority to attaining higher education for a better and more comfortable life, thus making the community respected and highly regarded.
“The world today only respects a highly-educated community with skills and expertise in various fields.
“And it’s only through education that poor Indians can get out of poverty and prevent social problems among them like gangsterism, which is a big problem in the community. “We also want the intellectuals and successful in the Indian community to assist and guide others towards betterment and success,” he said at the ‘First-Class Indian Students Appreciation 2013’ event, here, Sunday.
Ninety-six Indian students who obtained first-class bachelor’s degrees in their studies at the public higher learning institutions, including three students who received royal awards, were feted at the function.
Last year, 233 Indians received first-class bachelor’s degrees from such institutions.
