New Delhi, Jan 6 – The Special Envoy (Infrastructure) to India and South Asia, Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, is leading a 150-member delegation to the annual Indian diaspora meet, the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), here.
It is understood that during the event, Samy Vellu would make courtesy calls on key ministers in India.
The discussion during the meeting is expected to be on issues pertaining to infrastructure-related projects of mutual interest between Putrajaya and New Delhi.
The PBD is held on Jan 9 since 2003 to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community in the development of India.
The 12th PBD, which will be held in New Delhi from Jan 7 to 9, 2014, is entitled ‘Engaging Diaspora: Connecting Across Generations’.
Also attending the conference would be MIC president and Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri G. Palanivel, MIC deputy president and Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam, MIC vice-president and Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Datuk M. Saravanan, Putra MIC national coordinator and Deputy Education Minister P. Kamalanathan and federal and state government officials.
These conventions provide a platform to the overseas Indian community to engage with the government and people of the land of their ancestors for mutually beneficial activities.
It has also been useful in the networking among the overseas Indian community residing in various parts of the world and in enabling them to share their experiences in various fields.
During the event, individuals of exceptional merit are honoured with the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award to appreciate their role in India’s growth.
The event also provides a forum for discussing key issues concerning the Indian diaspora.
