Kuala Lumpur, Jan 8 – Glowing complexion and rosy skin are every woman’s desire and dream. To achieve this, they spend lots of money on skincare products.

All these products that promise good results like beautiful skin, have been tried and tested, and time has proven that most of these are not as effective as claimed by their manufacturers.

Fruit smoothies, says an expert, is an efficient way to nourish our body in order to have glowing skin.

Dr Ian Stephen of the University of Nottingham, Malaysia campus, who led the research found smoothies made from carrots and a selection of under-utilised local tropical fruits have the potential of doing wonders for our skin.

“These fruits are rich in essential ingredients which help our skin to retain its glow and give it a healthy appearance,” he said in a statement, here, Tuesday.

The lecturer from the School of Psychology and Biosciences said this study was to assess what effect a carotenoid-rich fresh fruit drink could have on skin and perceived attractiveness.

“About 80 volunteers took part in a six-week trial, where one group of students were given a smoothie made from carrots and local fruits, while a control group received mineral water.

“During that time, measurements were taken of their body composition, dietary intake, skin colour and brightness. Although the initial data suggests significant results, these will be scored by an independent group of experts before they are published,” he said.

Dr Stephen said after creating 30 different recipes, seven smoothies were chosen for the study, each containing up to 50 per cent under-utilised fruits.

Since many people tend not to drink enough water or eat enough fruits and vegetables, and even fall below the recommended five portions a day, Dr Stephen hopes to encourage people to eat and drink more healthily if this study is proven to improve the appearance of skin.

The study was funded by University of Nottingham, Malaysia campus.

Two years ago, Dr Stephen led a study on “Looking Good on Greens” which suggested eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables to give you a more healthy golden glow than the sun does.
