Kuala Lumpur, Jan 15- Teachers should exercise or play sports for at least half an hour three times a week to de-stress and stay healthy.

Such activities could also ensure they stay active and alert, National Parent-Teacher Association Collaborative Council president Assoc Prof Dr Mohd Ali Hassan said today.

“If teachers neglect their health, they’ll be listless, weak and unhealthy. And they would take sick leave and this will disrupt the students’ learning,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

He added that students would also emulate teachers who set a good example of caring for their health.

Sharing the same view, National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP) president Hashim Adnan felt that teachers were probably concerned about their health but in the course of their busy schedules ended up neglecting themselves.

Concerned about the importance of health care among teachers, Koperasi Yayasan Guru Malaysia Bhd (KYGMB) will be offering a comprehensive medical card known as MediSihat for their convenience.

KYGMB Board of Trustees chairman Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom said the card will be introduced soon and would offer medical insurance policies of up to RM450,000 coverage for surgery and hospitalisation and RM150,000 for personal accident.

KYGMB recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Pathlab Health Management Sdn Bhd, a clinical and pathology lab, for this purpose.

MediSihat also offers comprehensive blood tests at almost 50 Pathlab branches.

Alimuddin, who is the former Education director-general, said KYGMB was prepared to offer loans for up to 10 years to its members to fund the insurance premiums with repayments through pay deductions.
