New Delhi, Jan 18 – Veteran journalist Nalini Singh has said that Sunanda Pushkar, wife of Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor, who was found dead in a Delhi hotel on Friday had been “distraught” and was “crying” over phone when she spoke with her early morning on January 17. Nalini said Sunanda sounded disturbed and they discussed about Tharoor and Pakistan journalist Mehr Tarar (with whom Sunanda was involved in a Twitter war).

She has said that she would share the details of her conversation with the police. Nalini said she was waiting for Delhi Police to approach her for information.

“Sunanda called me at 12:10 am on 17th. The call lasted around seven minutes. The conversation was about that (Tharoor and Tarar’s alleged affair). She was very distraught, crying but she steadied herself in the middle,” Nalini said.

Nalini further said they discussed about the emails exchanged between Tharoor and Tarar. On her mental condition, Nalini said Sunanda was under the impression that she was very ill. But she couldn’t judge by the conversation whether Sunanda was in a state to harm herself.

“She was under the impression that she was very ill, she told me that she had been diagnosed with stomach TB. It was late at night and maybe she said it would be cancer now. When somebody is distraught, you don’t make them repeat their words. She was under the impression that she was not well at all. That would definitely play on her mind. She did mention to me that she had checked into a hospital in Kerala,” Nalini added.

“She was mighty upset. I told her everybody loves you. You need to know that. Let’s forget what’s on your mind. This woman (Tarar) whatever. You have a huge circle of friends you can rely on. She was extremely intelligent. This part of her personality was not recognised,” she said.
