Kuala Lumpur, Feb 12 – Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has urged the government to reduce inflation so that the rakyat can enjoy the real benefits of economic growth.
“We must pay attention to inflation. If the growth is five per cent, inflation at three per cent, this means that real growth is only two per cent.
“We must ensure that there is no inflation in the country. Today, I find that the inflation is high,” he told reporters after officiating the Buku Perdana Seminar and Forum here today.
Dr Mahathir was asked to comment on Moody’s Analytics, a division of Moody’s Corporation, which projected Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth at five per cent in the fourth quarter of 2013.
Meanwhile, the Royal Bank of Scotland projected that Malaysia would achieve a moderate GDP growth of 4.6 per cent in 2014 driven by net exports.
The government has targeted Malaysia to achieve a GDP growth of between five and 5.5 per cent this year.
