KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 15- The new electoral roll, with the list of 13.34 million voters who registered until December 2012, will be sent for gazette on Feb 22, Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd
Yusof said today.
He advised the voters to check the electoral roll and to inform the commission of any mistakes to be rectified. Abdul Aziz said 16 million Malaysians would be to eligible to vote in the coming 13th general election after the electoral roll had been gazetted.
“Only slightly over two million Malaysians who are eligible to vote have yet to register.
“The awareness among Malaysians to vote is improving and this means the promotion and hard work by the EC is successful,” he told a media conference after a roundtable discussion on the public perception of the EC organised by the National Council of Professors (MPN) and the Berita Harian newspaper here today.
Abdul Aziz said the new electoral roll included 2.3 million Malaysians, aged 39 and below, who registered as new voters. To a question from Professor Dr Ahmad Zaki Abu Bakar, from the Faculty of Computer Science and Information System, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), he said implementation of the electronic votes would require amendments in the existing law.
At the function, MPN chairman, Professor Emeritus Datuk Seri Dr Zakri Abdul Hamid , launched the website www.bangipoll.com containing research data on political socialisation conducted by various quarters, including MPN.
