GEORGE TOWN, May 12 — Ramkarpal Singh Deo, the third son of the late Karpal Singh, is hoping to increase the majority for the DAP in the Bukit Gelugor by-election on May 25.
Despite anticipating a tough fight, Ramkarpal Singh said he would work hard to convince the voters to defend his father’s seat.
“It’s not going to be an easy contest but I will work with my comrades in the party to ensure we win this by-election,” he told reporters after the nomination at the Dewan Sri Pinang here today.
The Bukit Gelugor parliamentary by-election, which has been necessitated by Karpal Singh’s death, is a four-cornered fight among the DAP, Parti Cinta Malaysia (PCM) and two independents.
DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang said he anticipated a tough fight in the by-election despite the Barisan Nasional (BN) not contesting.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the BN had the right not to contest. By not contesting in Bukit Gelugor, the BN could focus its machinery in the Teluk Intan by-election, said the Penang chief minister.
The Teluk Intan by-election is on May 31.
The Bukit Gelugor by-election is a four-cornered contest among Ramkarpal Singh, PCM vice-president Datuk Huan Cheng Guan and independent candidates Mohd Nabi Bux Mohd Abd Sathar and Abu Backer Sidek Mohammad Zan.
Polling is on May 25.
