79,414 Individuals detained throughout ‘OPS Cantas Khas’

Ahmad Zahid HamidiKUALA LUMPUR, June 10 – A total of 79,414 individuals involved in various crimes were detained since the operations codenamed ‘Ops Cantas Khas’ were launched on Aug 17, last year, the Dewan Rakyat sitting was told today.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that during the same period, 37,507 investigation papers had been initiated for various offences throughout the operations.

“Of the total, 7,256 cases had been brought to court, 28,486 cases were still under investigation while no action was taken on 1,948 cases,” he said

when replying to a question from Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed (BN-Pulai) on the effectiveness of Ops Cantas Khas in reducing organised crime in the country.

In addition, Ahmad Zahid said police had also seized 9,659 pieces of various types of firearms, ammunition, explosives and sheduled weapons believed to be used by certain gangs to commit crime.

He said 2,379 vehicles used in committing crime and stolen vehicles were also seized.

Ahmad Zahid pointed out that the implementation of Ops Cantas Khas had succeeded in reducing high-profile cases such as murder and robbery using firearms.

“Murder cases declined from 504 cases to 433 cases, a drop of 14 percent, gang robberies using firearms from 83 cases to 54 cases which showed a drop of 34 percent.

“Gang robbery without using firearms declined from 13,533 to 12,048, a drop of nine percent, while armed robbery from 20 cases to 14 cases, a drop of 13 percent,” the minister said.
