KUALA LUMPUR, July 3 – An University Malaya (UM) lecturer was among five locals identified as militants and are believed to be hiding in southern Philippines.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said Dr Mahmud Ahmad, 36, of the Islamic Studies Faculty, also known as Abu Hanzalah, from Taman Selayang Baru, Batu Caves, was identified as those involved in militant activities along with four others.
Khalid in a statement today said the identity was revealed following an investigation on 19 militant members who were arrested since April 28, by the Bukit Aman Counter Terrorism Division.
Others in the list were UM Photostat and stationery shop owner Mohd Najib Husen, 36, or Abraham, of Johor who stayed at Tainia Flats, Kota Damansara; Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) secretariat department staff, Muhammad Joraimee Awang Raimee, 39, or Abu Nur, from Selayang Baru, who stayed in a housing area in close proximity to Mahmud.
Another suspect was Mohd Amin Baco, 31, of Kampung Titingan, Tawau, Sabah and a labourer, Jeknal Adil, 30, known as Jek, of Kampung Kurnia Jaya, he said.
“Three of them are suspected to be involved in recruiting and arranging the travel of the militant members to join the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) in Syria.
“Two others were members of the Sabah Darul Islam Group which had joined the Abu Sayaf Group in the southern Philippines,” he said.
