UNITED NATIONS, July 9 — The United Nations Women has appointed British actress Emma Watson (pic) as its new goodwill ambassador, Xinhua news agency reported.
The actress best known for her role in the ‘Harry Potter’ film series will serve as advocate for the UN Women’s HeForShe campaign to promote gender equality.
HeForShe is a place for men to speak up and tell the world why equality for every woman and girl is worth fighting for.
UN Women executive director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said the engagement of young people is critical for the advancement of gender equality in the 21st century.
“Ms. Watson’s intellect and passion will enable UN Women’s messages to reach the hearts and minds of young people globally,” said Mlambo-Ngcuka.
