RAMALLAH (West Bank), Feb 20 – Some 800 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails have observed a one-day hunger strike on Tuesday in solidarity with four other inmates, namely Samer Issawi, Jaafar Ezzeddine, Ayman Sharawneh and Tareq Qaadan, who have been on hunger strike for months.
Algeria Press Services (APS) reported thousands of Palestinians demonstrated on Monday across the West Bank in solidarity with the Palestinians held in Israeli jails.
Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat, for his part, wrote to the European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, urging her to “take immediate action” in order to release the
Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails, particularly the hunger strikers. Erekat also urged the EU to “take concrete steps in order to end Israel’s impunity and defiance of international law.”
Ashton, on Saturday called on the Israeli government to “allow immediate restoration of their (Palestinian prisoners) visiting rights, and calls for full respect of international human rights obligations towards all Palestinian detainees and prisoners.”
