PETALING JAYA, Aug 21 – Malaysian talent represents the key to transforming our nation into a high-income economy, driven by knowledge-intensive and innovation-led activities. Thus delivering on talent is integral to the success of the Gamuda. The Gamuda Scholarship Award Programme is more than just a scholarship.
We are offering a chance for deserving young local talents to develop into strong all-rounder leaders. We believe that besides having a degree, good personal values, sound thinking capabilities and leadership skills are critical to succeed in life, and that is what Gamuda is offering its Gamuda Scholarship Award recipient.
This programme does not only provide financial assistance, but they will be exposed to ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ experiences through an array of training and development workshops which will be conducted during semester breaks, internship programmes, mentoring initiatives and networking opportunities, that will help the individuals to develop into well rounded individuals.
These additional activities were developed to challenge the scholars in terms of their values and personal mindsets. Also, a buddy will be assign to each of the Gamuda Scholarsto help them walk through their university years while maintaining contact withthe company.
All these activities while studying will help them build a solid foundation before they enter the workforce.“It is our belief that a rounded education and particularly the personal and character-building that goes with it is a very important infrastructure to provide the quality of human resource that will guarantee the sustainability of our country’s development,” said Y Bhg Dato’ Mohammed Hussein, Chairman of Gamuda Berhad in Gamuda Scholarship Award 2014 yesterday.
Qualification for the Gamuda Scholarship is therefore not just a walk in the park. The applicants went through a stringent selection process before being selected as a Gamuda scholar. The process included full day workshops at Gamuda’s Learning Centre where potential scholars were tested on their character and working style under stress and in a team.
Thereafter the scholars went through a 2nd assessment conducted by both external and internal assessors made up of professionals and and past scholars. Aligned with the Group’s value in inculcating leadership skills, taking ownership and working as a team, this was the first year Gamuda’s past scholars were involved throughout the entire selection process.
Gamuda is also committed to diversity and inclusion. In an industry that is male dominated, we want to, all things being equal, particularly encourage women in engineering, especially in civil engineering. As part of our diversity initiative, we want to achieve greater gender balance by hiring and identifying more female engineering candidates.
In the coming years, we will be giving greater attention to encourage more women who are pursuing engineering courses to apply for the Gamuda Scholarship Award Programme to build a core of capable women in leadership especially in the engineering field.
There are already today a cadre of good, competent female engineers in the Group who are playing significant roles for the Group.“As past scholars, we are able to provide valuable insights to improve the effectiveness and quality of the Gamuda Scholarship Award Programme as we would know the needs of the scholars embarking on this journey,” said Ms Lau Yoke Yen, a graduate scholar from the 2002 batch who is now heading the Gamuda Scholarship Award Programme Working Committee.
This year, a total of 15 deserving recipients out of more than 800 applications received were selected to receive the awards this year. Dato’ Mohammed Hussein, Chairman of Gamuda Berhad, Dato’ Lin Yun Ling, Group Managing Director and Dato’Ir Paul Ha, Deputy Group Managing Director presented the awards to the recipients at Menara Gamuda witnessed by Gamuda’s board of directors and senior management, recipients’ families and friends and past scholars of Gamuda Scholarship Award.
