NEW DELHI, September 19- India’s music industry on Friday mourned the passing away of world renowned Carnatic musician and legendary mandolin player Uppalapu Srinivas.
Srinivas, 45, died of liver failure Friday morning in Chennai in southern state of Tamil Nadu.He was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai due to some illness, media reports said.
Celebrities and fellow musicians took to twitter to convey their condolences.”When we were kids Srinivas was considered the golden child. Grew up listening to the genius. Sad day. Child prodigy. Gone too soon,” actor Siddharth tweeted.
“Today India cries. Today a part of Indian music died and we are orphaned. RIP my dear bother Mandolin Srinivas,” said tabla player Zakir Hussain.Singer Sonu Nigam tweeted: “The great mandolin exponent U Srinivas is no more unfortunately.”
Srinivas picked up his father Satyanarayana’s mandolin at the age of six.He received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award in 1998 and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2010, the highest recognition given to practising artists in the country.
