GEORGE TOWN, Feb 26 – Police are willing to escort teachers to ensure their safety when they go out and monitor the movement of students who play truant. Penang Police Chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi(Pic) said they will do so only at the request of the school as police do not have the authority to act on truant students.
He said only schools have the authority to take disciplinary action on the students, which includes implementing guidelines to curb such activities.
“Most importantly, the parents should play a role in educating their children from getting involved in such social ills instead of leaving it to the children,” he told reporters after presenting credentials to school monitors of
Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Georgetown in Batu Lanchang, today.
Abdul Rahim said police have also set up a team of police liaison officers in schools statewide to help foster a safe and crime-free environment in school premises.
“The team involves police officers or sargeants. So far we have received good cooperation from the state education department and teachers,” he added.
