abu-bakarKUALA LUMPUR, May 22 – The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) will set up a Crime Prevention Department in Bukit Aman (Federal police hadquarters) and all state and district police contingent headquarters soon.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar (photo) said this was for better crime prevention in line with the demands of society other than comprehensively reducing the crime index.

In his first interview with the media in Bukit Aman today since succeeding Tan Sri Ismail Omar as IGP, Khalid said a director’s post would be created and police officers and personnel would be recruited to man the new department.

“We will table the proposal to the Home Ministry this month for the setting up of the departments,” he said.  Prior to this, PDRM, which has a strength of 120,000 officers and policemen, has eight departments, namely Criminal Investigation Department, Criminal Investigation Department (Narcotics), Criminal Investigation Department (Commercial), Management Department, Special Task Force (operations and counter-terrorism), Special Branch, Public Order and Internal Security Department and and Logistics Department.       Khalid, 55, replaced Ismail, 60, whose contract expired last Friday.
