lim lipKUALA LUMPUR, JUNE 12- Police were today urged to disclose the identity of the fourth suspect in the murder of N Dhamendran, including publishing a photograph of him in the media.

This would enable the public to help police track him down, Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng (photo)  said at a press conference here.

dharmaDhamendran was found dead last May 21 while he was under police custody. Four policemen were charged with the murder on June 5, but one of them is at large.

Police have withheld his identity, only disclosing that he holds the rank of inspector. The other three are Sergeant Jaffri Jaafar, Corporal Mohd Nahar Abdul Rahman and Corporal Mohd Haswadi Zamri Shaari.

Lim said there was no reason to keep the suspect’s identity secret since he was already on the police wanted list.

He noted that police distributed mug shots of suspects at a press conference over a different case yesterday.

“I urge them to apply the same method on Dhamendran’s case to show there is fair treatment,” he said. “This would provide members of the public with a chance to assist the police to look for the suspect.”

Dhamendran, 31,  died in his cell at the D9 branch of the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters while under remand as a suspect in a case of attempted murder. The remand order was for 10 days from May 12.

Preliminary post-mortem reports said his back and buttocks were severely injured and his ankles and ears had staples stuck in them.

Lim also called for an investigation into why police had first attributed his death to breathing difficulties. He said this should be one of the terms of reference for the task force set up by the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission to probe custodial deaths.

“Was there an attempted cover-up?” he asked.
