KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21- The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) has welcomed the assurance by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak not to introduce laws that infringe on fundamental human rights and freedom.
Its chairman Tan Sri Hasmy Agam said the move was in the right direction towards finding a balance in protecting fundamental human rights and public interest notably in fighting crime.
“This is in line with the feedback given by Suhakam on proposals to bring back laws that allow for detention without trial to tackle the rising crime rate.
“It is also in line with the nation’s aspiration to be a vibrant and fully functional democracy and become a developed nation in the near future,” he said in a statement here Tuesday.
Yesterday, Najib had said the government had no immediate plans to reintroduce already abolished preventive laws to tackle serious crimes in the country.
Hasmy added that the commission also wanted the government to conduct an indepth study to review national security policies towards meeting public security needs in the long run.
