Kuala Lumpur, Dec 21 – Seventy-four per cent of individuals in more than 40 countries believe that biometric smartphones will become mainstream in 2014, according to recent research by Ericsson ConsumerLab.
Its Head of Research Michael Bjorn said as most websites are demanding longer passwords with a mixture of numbers, letters and symbols which are almost impossible to remember, this has led to a growing interest in biometric alternatives.
The research found that 52 per cent of smartphone users want to use their fingerprints instead of passwords and 48 per cent are interested in using eye recognition to unlock their screen.
Ericsson ConsumerLab’s global research programme is based on annual interviews with over 100,000 individuals.
Bjorn said in a statement Friday that the fast global uptake of smartphones has completely changed the way people communicate and use the internet.
“Now we enter a new phase of rapidly-diversifying smartphone use and people are looking for applications across all sectors of society.
“This includes everything from shopping and daycare to communication with authorities, and transportation. Applications are becoming more important than what phone people use,” he added.
