BANGKOK, June 25 — The Organisation of Free Thais for Human Rights and Democracy, a group opposing the military junta, announced its formation yesterday. Its secretary-general is Charupong Reuangsuwan, the former president of the Pheu Thai Party, who has been on the run, refusing to respond to a summons issued by the junta.
He announced his resignation recently as leader of Pheu Thai, the party of former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra that was toppled by the military junta
in a coup on May 22.
The group announced that goals included opposing the military junta, and restoring and strengthening Thai democracy. “It is clear that the junta’s actions are nothing but a grand larceny.
“What they have stolen, however, are your most precious sovereignty and fundamental rights that are legally guaranteed under democratic governance,” the group said in a statement announcing its establishment.
