KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5- The MIC is to conduct elections for state and branch chairmen instead of the party president appointing them, MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel said yesterday.

He said the party would amend its constitution at an extraordinary general meeting in February or March next year.”Currently, the state and branch chairmen are appointed by the party president. I find this method no longer suitable and democratic.”We (MIC) are carrying out changes and an extraordinary general meeting will be held in February or March next year to pass the amendments,” he said.

He spoke to reporters after attending the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the special secretariat of the Prime Minister’s Department (SEED) with the Centre for Entrepreneur Development and Research (CEDAR) here.

Palanivel, who is the natural resources and environment minister, said he would go down to the ground to meet party members nationwide to discuss the election of the new committee members.

He denied allegations that the MIC’s image was getting tarnished among the Indian community in the country, and said the party would continue to safeguard the interests of the community.
