Kuala Lumpur – The MIC supports and welcomes the Prime Minister’s announcement that political funding in the country must be carried out in a legal and transparent manner.
MIC Acting President Datuk Seri Dr S.Subramaniam said the he supports Najib’s announcement on the formation of National Consultative for Political Financing Committee.
Najib announced yesterday that the National Consultative for Political Financing Committee will be led by two ministers and will ensure any money received for the purpose of politics is done so with “integrity”.
In supporting Prime Minister’s announcement Dr Subra said there is no doubt that the current political system needs funding and the question now is how to do it rightly and to manage the funds properly and in a transparent manner.
“There is now awareness that the system on political funding must be put on a proper footing. So, the government is provoking a debate on this before finding the possible pathways to implement any procedures and law” Subra said while speaking to reporters after officiating the Optometry Conference organised by the Health Ministry together with the Optometric Association.
Subra also pointed out that several countries are already following systems on political funding and such a system if introduced in Malaysia would be applicable to both Barisan Nasional component parties and the opposition parties.
“For example US Presidential Election campaigns raise millions of dollars but they have a system to do it” Subra said.
