BEIJING, March 12 – On Thursday, the National People’s Congress (NPC) of China will vote for incoming President Xi Jinping to take over formally from incumbent Hu Jintao.
The following day, the Chinese top legislature which came after the 18th Communist Party of China (CPC) National Congress in November last year, will also vote for incoming premier Li Keqiang to succeed outgoing Wen Jiabao. The country’s vice-president and vice-premiers will be elected on March 14 and 15, respectively by the NPC. However, the voting process for the top positions in the country is cloaked in secrecy.
The reshuffle of a once-in-a-decade leadership will be completed at the first annual session of the 12th NPC, scheduled from between March 5 and 17. It has drawn international attention to witness the future development of the world’s second largest economy.
The NPC will decide the state councilors, ministers for government departments, ministers in charge of commissions of the State Council, the governor of the People’s Bank of China and an auditor-general, as well as the State Council’s secretary-general.
It will determine the chairman, vice-chairmen and members of the Central Military Commission of the People’s Republic of China, as well as the heads of the Supreme People’s Court and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate.
