Kuala Lumpur – The battle to save Vivekananda Ashram from being demolished is finally over as the Ministry of Tourism and Culture has declared the Ashram as a national heritage site.
Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz made the announcement today at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur.
MIC, opposition parties under Pakatan Rakyat coalition and several Indian organisations carried out a fierce battle for several months urging the government to declare the site as a national heritage as it was seen as the only way to save the historical and sentimental site being replaced with a multi- storey commercial building proposed by the Trustees of the Ashram.
Nazri today officially announced that the Parliament has gazetted the site as a national heritage. Nazri himself, in his ministerial capacity provided all the support needed to turn the site as a national heritage site.
