KOTA BHARU, March 16  – The Barisan Nasional (BN) government does not need 22 years to build affordable homes for the low income group as promised by the Kelantan PAS government. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said since taking over the reins in 2009, he studied the needs of Kelantan people and decided to provide them with more comfortable homes.

“During the Jelajah Janji Ditepati programme 53 days ago (Jan 20), I made several promises including to build 3,000 units of affordable homes in Kelantan.

“Some people may wonder if the promise will be fulfilled. Don’t worry the promise will be fulfilled in full,” he said at the groundbreaking ceremony of the People’s Housing Programme (PPR) project in Wakaf Mek Zainab here today.

najibImplementation of the project proves that the BN government is committed to provide low-cost housing to the poor, at only RM35,000 compared to the construction cost of RM160,000. Najib said no government in the world could afford to subsidise RM125,000 much less the PAS government which promised “the moon and the sky” and collected funds from the people.

“In 22 years, they made lots of promises but lied to Kelantan people. Recently they promised to build Kota Bharu-Kuala Kerai highway and collected funds which then became the Mamali Fund and Serambi Mekah Fund which were never
audited.”

Najib’s speech was greeted by shouts of “Change, Change, Change, and “Bo La Wei” (enough) from a crowd of about 30,000 people. He assured the project involving 1,000 units flats of 700 square feet with three bedrooms, two rooms, living and dining room would be completed by 2015. It will be the pilot project for more such housing projects for the low-income group in Kelantan.

It is implemented by the federal government via the Housing and Local Government Ministry. Present at the ceremony were Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heung, International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamad and Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen. After the ceremony, Najib and wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor departed for Kuala Lumpur.
