MEXICO CITY, March 25 – A total of 11 forest fires have spread through 2,500 hectares of land in Mexico’s north central state of San Luis Potosi, forcing 400 people to leave their homes. Five of the worst affected municipalities were in Mexico’s heavily forested Huasteca region, Xinhua news agency reported.
State cabinet secretary Jose Guadalupe Torres Armenta said the federal government will be asked to declare a state of emergency. San Luis Potosi has sought help from neighbouring states to deal with the disaster — considered the worst in the state’s history. More than 500 professional and volunteer firefighters have been trying to contain the blaze.
