Selangor dissolves assembly, Kedah, Penang and Kelantan to do so tomorrow

Khalid IbrahimKLANG, April 4- Selangor today dissolved its state legislative assembly for elections, the first of the four opposition states to do so, while Kedah, Penang and Kelantan are to dissolve their assemblies by tomorrow at the latest.  Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim(Pic) said the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, signed the instrument of dissolution at 2.30 pm during the audience he had with the ruler at Istana Alam Shah here.

Abdul Khalid said Speaker Datuk Teng Chang Khim would send the notification on the dissolution to the Election Commission office today.  Meanwhile, at a news conference at the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) headquarters in Tropicana, Petaling Jaya, Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng confirmed that the assemblies of their states would be dissolved tomorrow.

They had attended a meeting of the opposition pact leaders there. Opposition Leader and PKR advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was also present. Azizan said he had an audience this morning with the Sultan of Kedah Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, who is the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, and obtained His Majesty’s consent for the Kedah legislative assembly to be dissolved.

“Tomorrow, at 9.40 am, I will have an audience at the Istana Anak Bukit to inform the Kedah Council of Regency of the sultan’s consent for the dissolution,” he said.

Lim said he had an audience with Penang Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas today to obtain his consent for the dissolution of the state legislative assembly tomorrow.  Nik Abdul Aziz said he would have an audience with the Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Muhammad V, at the Istana Negeri tonight.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday announced the dissolution of the Dewan Rakyat to enable the 13th general election to be held. He advised the pertinent states to dissolve their assemblies for the elections to be held
simultaneously.

The Perlis, Perak, Melaka, Pahang, Terengganu and Sabah legislative assemblies were dissolved yesterday and the Johor assembly, today.  The Negeri Sembilan assembly dissolved automatically on March 28 upon completion of its full term.
Sarawak will not hold a state election now as the last one was held in 2011.
