MELAKA, April 19 – The Melaka Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) today announced that it will contest 10 seats in the state in the 13th general election (GE13). Melaka PKR chairman, who is also the PKR National Youth (AMK) head, Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin said the 10 seats comprised three parliamentary and seven state constituency seats.
“The three parliamentary seats include two which were announced by PKR advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently, namely Bukit Katil and Tangga Batu.
“The other parliamentary seat is Jasin, while the seven state constituency seats are Ayer Limau, Rembia, Gadek, Machap, Sungai Udang, Paya Rumput and Rim,” he told reporters at the function to announce the PKR candidates at the Bukit Piatu PKR office, here.
He said seven new faces were being fielded namely Rahmat Yusof, 55, for the Jasin Parliamentary seat; Rahim Ali, 67, (Tangga Batu); Asri Buang, 58, (Sungai Udang); Rusnah Aluai, 51, (Rembia); Halim Bachik, 44, (Ayer Limau); G Rajandran, 51, (Gadek) and Azmi Khamis, 49, (Rim).
Shamsul Iskandar said the old faces who were retained were himself in the Parliamentary constituency of Bukit Katil, Taha Ahmad, 62, Paya Rumput state seat and Ginie Lim Siew Lin, 32, in the Machap state constituency. In the 12th general election, Shamsul Iskandar stood in the Dungun Parliamentary constituency, in Terengganu but lost to the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate, Matulidi Jusoh by a majority of 4,994 votes.
Meanwhile, Taha who had contested for the Paya Rumput state seat against BN candidate Tahir Hassan also lost by a majority of 1,894 votes and Ginie, who had contested in Machap, lost to the BN candidate, Lai Meng Chong by a majority of 1,639 votes. When asked on the chances of the opposition pact winning in the constituencies contested in the state, he said:
“We are confident of winning seven of the 10 seats contested comprising two Parliamentary and five state seats, the other five seats we are hoping for our partners, the DAP and PAS to win,” he said without disclosing the name of the constituencies.
