IPOH: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has condemned the killing of Customs deputy director-general Datuk Shaharuddin Ibrahim (pix) who was shot on his way to work.
The prime minister has ordered the police to conduct a thorough probe to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Najib said he was shocked by the news and felt saddened that such an incident could occur.
Shaharuddin was shot by an unknown assailant while in his car on his way to work in Putrajaya early Friday.
He had left his house in Dengkil at around 7.55am in a Nissan SUV.
At about 8.15am, two men on a motorcycle approached the car at a traffic light at Lebuh Wawasan Lebuh Sentos flyover and fired three shots hitting Shaharuddin in the neck.
Najib said the deceased was in the process of undertaking legal action against some parties. They could be unhappy with the stern action taken by the Customs Department, he added.
“I strongly condemn the incident (killing) and urge the police to take action as our public servants must be protected,” Najib told a press conference here.
