Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, who delivered the lost Ayer Hitam seat to Barisan would be installed as the ninth Mentri Besar of Kedah.

Unofficial result showed Mukhriz securing 3,320 votes, while incumbentDatuk Abdul Ghani Ahmad secured 3,003 votes.

Kedah Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang said Mukhriz’ risk has paid off as he had helped deliver the state to Barisan Nasional by contesting a tough to win seat.

“He had taken the risk for the betterment of Kedahans.

“He could have contested a safe seat, but he decided to take a more challenging path in order to secure one more seat that could make a big difference,” said Tan.

At press time, unofficial result showed Barisan winning 21 state seats.

At stake were 36 state seats and 15 parliamentary seats.

Some 72.82% of the 1.041mil voters in Kedah cast their votes yesterday.

Outgoing Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said he had won in a four-cornered fight with his cousin Mohd Fazillah Mohd Ali (Barisan) and two other independents.

“I have won, but there is no official tally yet,” he said.

Gerakan was wiped out in Kedah as Dr Cheah Soon Hai was defeated by DAP’s Tan Kok Yew in Derga.
