SHAH ALAM, May 6 – The PKR-DAP-PAS pact retains power in Selangor after winning 44 out of 56 state seats, leaving the Barisan Nasional (BN) with the remaining 12 seats, in the 13th general election.
The results for all the contested seats in the state were announced quite late, with the last result involving Sungai Pinang state seat came in only at 4.30am today.
The pact also won eight additional seats as compared to the 36 seats they secured in the 2008 polls. The additional seats are Kuala Kubu Baharu, Sabak, Dusun Tua, Seri Serdang, Tanjung Sepat, Morib, Taman Templer, Paya Jaras Sementa and Sungai Pelek.
The number of seats won by BN, however, declined to only 12 this year from 20 in 2008. Nevertheless, BN managed to wrestle back two state seats, Bukit Melawati and Kota Damansara, which it lost in the last general election.
For parliamentary seats, both the pact and the BN retained the same number of seats they won in 2008. The PKR-DAP-PAS pact now controls 17 parliamentary seats with PKR having nine, while DAP and PAS having four each.
BN now holds five parliamentary seats in Selangor, namely Sabak Bernam, Sungai Besar, Tanjong Karang, Kuala Selangor and Hulu Selangor. Although BN lost the Sepang and Pandan parliamentary seats, it still managed to wrestle back Kuala Selangor and Hulu Selangor seats.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak when commenting the BN’s overall performance in the 13th polls said it was the results of the ‘Chinese tsunami’.
Selangor fell into the hands of the opposition in 2008, in what was described as political tsunami, which also saw the BN lost its two-thirds majority.
