LIMA, May 22 – Peru has an annual production of over four million tonnes of potatoes, making it the largest potato producer in Latin America, said representative of International Potato Centre, Miguel Ordinola.
“Peru has now surpassed the four million tonnes of potato production, which amounted to 2.7 million or 2.8 million tonnes eight years ago. The interesting thing is that the consumption of this product has also increased,” he said.
At the launch of the National Potato Day, to be celebrated on May 30, Ordinola noted that the production of this Peruvian tuber is a viable business for farmers.
“Ecuador and Colombia are starting to import Peruvian potato due to its high quality,” Ordinola added.
He stressed that the efforts of several sectors, including the government, farmers and public-private partnerships (PPPs) have helped diversify this product.
