GEORGE TOWN, June 4 – The Gerakan party election at the national level, which has been postponed since 2011 to concentrate on the 13th general election (GE13) on May 5, will be held on Oct 26.
The National Party Election Supervisory Committee chairman, Tan Sri Dr Chin Fook Weng said the election process would begin with elections at the branch level tomorrow (June 5).
“The election process will be held at the divisional and national levels around August and September and the climax will be the general assembly at the national level on Oct 26 which will be opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak,” he said.
He said this to reporters at a media conference held to introduce the new state Gerakan secretary Dr Lim Boon Ben who took over from Goh Kheng Sneah who resigned on May 5.
Dr Lim, a dental surgeon who runs a clinic in Nibong Tebal, had been involved in the party for the past 30 years and would hold the post of Gerakan state secretary until the conclusion of the party election with the formation of a new leadership line-up.
Dr Chin also welcomed the younger generation to join Gerakan to strengthen and widen the party’s struggles in line with the current development.
“We want many young people to join the party, who could inject a new spirit to continue the party struggles. We also welcome those who are willing to contest and become party leaders,” he said.
He said Gerakan was looking for a new formula to attract the young generation from various ethnic groups to join the party and contribute toward the struggles to realise the national vision.
