IPL spot-fixing: Sreesanth walks out of jail along with Chavan, alleged bookies

SREESANTHJUNE 12- After spending 26 days behind bars in Indian Premier League (IPL) spot-fixing case, cricketer Sreesanth was released from Tihar Jail on Tuesday night along with Ankeet Chavan and 17 others.

Sreesanth was arrested along with Chavan and another player Ajit Chandila on May 16 from Mumbai by Delhi Police.

After emerging out of Tihar jail, Sreesanth addressed the media and said, “I have always the played the game(cricket) wirth heart and soul and in its true spirit. I will abide by the law of the land and will help in the investigation in the case.”

Along with Sreesanth, Chavan and Chandila, 14 alleged bookies were also granted bail on Monday by a court.

Sreesanth was in police custody for the first 13 days while for the rest of the period he was lodged in Tihar Jail.

In between, Chavan was granted interim bail for his marriage.

On Monday, a Delhi court while granting bail in the IPL spot-fixing case indicted Delhi Police for slapping the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) provisions on Sreesanth, Chavan and the 17 others.

The court said that there was prima facie “no sufficient material” against the accused to establish their “nexus” with organised crime syndicate.

The court granted bail to 17 other accused, apart from Sreesanth and Chavan, on a personal bond of Rs.50,000 with one surety of the like amount.

26 persons have been arrested by Delhi Police so far, including Sreesanth and two of his Rajasthan Royals teammates – Chavan and Ajit Chandila – in connection with the case.

Besides the 19 who were granted bail by the court, six others were in judicial custody till June 18 while one of the alleged bookies, Ramesh Vyas, is in police custody till June 18.

Chandila and six others have are yet to apply for bail.
