KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — The MIC has set Sept 22 as the date for the eagerly awaited election for the post of MIC President.
MIC President Datuk Seri G. Palanivel (pic) said election for all posts would be held by this year in accordance with the requirement by the Registrar of Societies (ROS).
“I met the ROS twice after the 13th General Election and they have advised to hold the election by this year,” he told reporters at the MIC headquarters after chairing a MIC Central Working Committee meeting, here, today.
He added that the CWC had decided to have the election for the post of President on Sept 22 and nomination for the post on Sept 1.
Election for the posts of Deputy President, three vice presidents and 23 CWC members would be held in November or December, he said.
Palanivel said all 3,900 MIC branches must hold their annual general meeting by Aug 4.
“The election for divisions will start by the end of September and continue till October…the division election will be carried out state by state during the period,” he said.
The last time the MIC had its election was in 2009 when former President Datuk Seri S.Samy Vellu won the post unopposed.
In 2010, Samy decided to resign and handed the baton to Palanivel who was then his deputy.
The MIC should have held its election last year but was shelved to focus on the 13th General Election.
Meanwhile, Palanivel said if elected this year, it may well be his last term in office as President.
“If I am retained, it will be my last term…after that I will step down, because now I’m already 64,” he said.
