Datul Jahara elected new Penang opposition leader

GEORGE TOWN, June 19- Telok Air Tawar Assemblyman Datuk Jahara Hamid (photo)  was elected as the new Penang opposition leader, succeeding Penaga Assemblyman Datuk Azhar Ibrahim.

jaharaPenang Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman said th appointment showed the Umno recognition for women leaders.

“We are pleased with the appointment as it has created history in Malaysia where a woman has been elected as the opposition leader at the State Legislative Assembly level,” he told a news conference here today.

Zainal Abidin said Penang Umno had also given its full trust to Jahara to do her best on any issue in the State Assembly for the sake of the people in the state regardless of race and religion.

Jahara, who was previously the state Women and Sports Development Committee chairman during the Barisan Nasional (BN) rule in Penang, has been the Teluk Air Tawar elected representative for the past five terms.
