Melaka distributes 88,000 Face Masks

MELAKA, June 25 – The Melaka state government has distributed about 88,000 face masks for free throughout the state due to current haze, said Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Idris Haron.

He said of the total, 50,000 masks were distributed to secondary and primary schools, 28,000 masks to state constituencies and 10,000 for the use of the health department staff.

idris-haron“We hope that the public wear face masks when they are outside to avoid being exposed to risks that can affect their health,” he told reporters after opening an Occupational Safety, Health and Environment (OSHE) campaign at Melaka Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) here today.

Meanwhile, he said the state government would inform from time to time on the reopening of 313 primary and secondary schools in Melaka which were ordered to close yesterday due to the Air Pollutant Index (API) recording hazardous levels  on sunday.

face maskAt 2pm yesterday, Melaka City and Bukit Rambai recorded APIs of 129 and 151 respectively.

The air pollution level is categorised as hazardous when the reading is 301 or more; very unhealthy at 201 to 300; unhealthy at 101 to 200; moderate at 51 to 100 and good from zero to 50.
