KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 – The Education Ministry is prepared to review the posting of married teachers on humanitarian basis, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy Minister Datuk Mary Yap (photo) said this was because it was inappropriate for married couple, especially newlyweds, to be separated.

“Based on my experience as a school principal, if any of my teachers asked to be transferred as they were married, I definitely would give my full support.

mary-yap“This is done on humanitarian bases…it’s not good and very inappropriate for a husband and wife to be separated,” she said when replying to Datuk Hasbullah Osman’s (BN-Gerik) supplementary question during the sitting today.

On Hasbullah’s original question about efforts to empower the Malaysian Teachers Education Institute (IPGM), Yap said several activities had been organised, including the campaign to lure 30 per cent of students who excelled in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) to venture into teaching profession through IPGM.

She said the institute had also implemented its rating initiative for all the 27 IPGM campuses nationwide, besides organising courses to empower teachers’ education and professional development.

To enable IPGM’ image and prestige to be at par with public institutions of higher learning, a strategic plan had also been formulated in order to achieve the target of 33 per cent of IPGM lecturers having a doctorate degree by 2020, Yap said.

Last year, she said 308 out of 3,947 IPGM lecturers were doctorate degree holder, while 3,057 others were Master’s degree holders.
