KUALA LUMPUR, July 3- The MIC will deploy its machinery to help Barisan Nasional (BN) retain its seat in the Kuala Besut by-election.
MIC deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the Indian community only made up several hundred people in Kuala Besut and the party was confident of meeting as many of them as possible.
“We will go down and meet the Indian community as much as we can, 0.08 per cent is not much, only a few hundreds, it’s mainly an Umno constituency,” he told reporters when met at the Parliament lobby here yesterday.
The Kuala Besut by-election will be the first held after the 13th General Election, following the death of its incumbent assemblyman, Dr A. Rahman Mokhtar, last Wednesday.
During that election, A. Rahman defended the Kuala Besut seat for BN by defeating PAS candidate Napisah Ismail with a 2,434 vote majority.
The Election Commission will hold a meeting this Friday to determine the date of the by-election.
The Kuala Besut state constituency has 17,679 registered voters.
